Colonial Williamsburg adds tinsmithing tools to collection

Sunday - 5/20/2012, 12:23pm  ET

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Colonial Williamsburg is adding more than 20 antique tinsmithing tools to its collection.

The historic area says the tools donated by a New York couple will help Colonial Williamsburg add tinsmithing to the dozens of 18th-century trades practices by historic trade artisans.

But the tools won't be used in day-to-day practice of tinsmithing. They will instead be used as models by the historic area's toolmakers so that they can use replicas.

Colonial Williamsburg says it will add the tinsmithing trade in 2013. The historic area has already started reconstructing the tin shop as part of the recently opened Anderson Blacksmith Shop and Public Armoury project.
