Memorial Day event comforts families of fallen heroes

Sunday - 5/20/2012, 6:19am  ET

WASHINGTON - Memorial Day weekend is an especially tough time for the families of our fallen military heroes. But it's also a time for them to get some comfort and support.

The annual TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp are back for the 18th year in the D.C. area.

This year, Vice-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will be speaking to families on Friday at the start of the event in Crystal City.

"This is a special program over the course of the weekend for anyone grieving the death of someone who served in the military," says Ami Nieberger Miller, spokeswoman for TAPS. "During the event, they'll be attending workshops on how to cope with their grief."

She says there will be more than 2,000 participants from across the country. The Good Grief Camp program in particular is aimed at young survivors who are grieving the death of a parent, sibling or another loved one.
