Va.'s new elk herd grows to 2 dozen

VANSANT, Va. (AP) - Virginia's new elk herd has grown to two dozen since a restoration project began in Buchanan County earlier this year.
Sixteen adults and four calves were released between May 24 and June 7 from a holding corral on a reclaimed strip mine near Vansant. More calves have been born since then.
Allen Boyton with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries tells The Bristol Herald Courier (' http://bit.ly/PNwMib) that some of the bulls wandered up to 7 miles away. They recently returned for mating season.
Buchanan County administrator Craig Horn says county officials haven't received any complaints about the elk.
