VANSANT, Va. (AP) - Virginia's new elk herd has grown to two dozen since a restoration project began in Buchanan County earlier this year.

Sixteen adults and four calves were released between May 24 and June 7 from a holding corral on a reclaimed strip mine near Vansant. More calves have been born since then.

Allen Boyton with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries tells The Bristol Herald Courier (' that some of the bulls wandered up to 7 miles away. They recently returned for mating season.

Buchanan County administrator Craig Horn says county officials haven't received any complaints about the elk.
