VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Navy is creating a new command that will be responsible for conducting high-level security near ports, providing protection for certain ships operating in coastal waterways and to sometimes take part in offensive combat.
The Navy said Monday that the command will be called the Coastal Riverine Force. It will be established June 1.
The force will be the result of a merger between Riverine Group 1 and Maritime Expeditionary Security Force.
The force will be comprised of two groups _ one home ported in Portsmouth, Va., and the other in Imperial Beach, Calif. Active squadrons in those groups will be located at other bases in each area while there will also be a deployed detachment in Bahrain. Reserve squadrons will be located in Newport, R.I., and Jacksonville, Fla.
