RICHMOND, Va. - Republican Mitt Romney and Democratic President Barack Obama each got about $1 million from Virginia donors in the first three months of this year.

Obama had a slight edge, collecting $992,208 to Romney's $989,398. That's according to data from the nonprofit, nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project, an independent tracker of cash in state politics.

Twenty-six percent of Obama's total, or $257,000, was from Washington's closest Virginia suburbs, Alexandria and Arlington. Overall, Obama received 1,765 individual Virginia donations, with 914 of them for $250 or less and 333 for $1,000 or more.

Romney also scored heavily in northern Virginia, pulling 58 percent of his total from Alexandria, McLean and Arlington. He had 954 donations, 267 of which were for $250 or less, and 525 of which were for $1,000 or more.
