MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. - The Virginia State Police has identified a motorist who was hit by a car as he was retrieving furniture that fell off his pickup truck.
State police spokeswoman Corinne N. Geller says 53-year-old Alfred C. Perutelli III of Gladstone died at a local hospital after the accident occurred Wednesday afternoon on Route 29 outside Lynchburg.
The car also hit Trooper D.T. Wilson as he was helping Perutelli. He suffered serious injuries/
Geller says Wilson positioned his cruiser to prevent traffic from hitting the furniture and activated its emergency lights.
A car swerved to avoid the cruiser about 10 minutes later but the driver overcorrected. The vehicle swerved back into the lane and hit Wilson and Gerutelli. The driver of the car wasn't injured.
The investigation is continuing.
