LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Roanoke man has admitted to stealing from the Social Security Administration by failing to report more than $1 million in income.
Risden Richardson pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to one count of theft of government money.
Federal prosecutors said that evidence in the case showed that the 52-year-old Richardson started receiving $1,348 in monthly Social Security disability payments in October 1998 for a back disorder. People who draw disability payments can't earn more than $1,000 a month or work more than 80 hours a month.
Records show that he earned nearly $1.4 million between 2002 and 2010 as a tractor-trailer driver.
Richardson faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 when he's sentenced. He likely will be ordered to pay restitution.
