7-plus miles of Va. tidal waterfront protected

Tuesday - 4/24/2012, 1:39pm  ET

RICHMOND, Va. - More than seven miles of lower tidal waterfront on the Rappahannock River are being protected from future development under a new conservation easement.

The 640-acre farmland easement announced Tuesday by state officials was brokered by landowner Minnie K. Burch, the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

An easement entails the purchase of development rights to ensure that productive agricultural land remains in farming. In this easement, a combination of federal and private funds was used.

Burch donated 37 percent of the funding to the state. In return, she will receive state and federal tax credits.

Burch said she grew up on the farm with her four siblings and is intent on keeping it for agricultural use.
