Tuesday - 4/24/2012, 3:00am  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) - George Washington University students are beginning an effort to collect old cellphones from Metro riders in the Washington area to help fund health projects abroad.

The students are asking Metro riders to bring their old cellphones and portable electronics to donate on Wednesday morning from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. They will be collecting unused electronics at 15 Metro stations in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

GW is working with the group Hope Phones to recycle used cellphones. Proceeds will be used to fund health projects for mothers and children in Mali, Malawi and Nepal.

Students also will be promoting a program called Text4Baby that provides health information through text messages for pregnant women and new mothers in Washington.
