CHESTERFIELD, Va. - Chesterfield County's registrar is apologizing after several voters' personal information was found in an outside trash container.
Registrar Lawrence C. Haake III tells The Richmond Times-Dispatch ( http://bit.ly/JmmTFv) that he's taken steps to make sure that it doesn't happen again. Now, all paper handled by his office will be shredded.
Haake says a section removed from three Virginia voter registration applications was accidentally mixed in with envelopes instead of being shredded. The envelopes were then tossed in the trash container.
The section deals with previous voter registration status and includes a voter's Social Security number, full name and date of birth.
