Sunday - 4/15/2012, 6:59am  ET

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Thousands put on their running shoes to participate in the "Run in Remembrance" in memory of the victims of the April 2007 mass killings on the Blacksburg campus.

The Roanoke Times ( http://bit.ly/HTF4hS) reports that 6,800 participated Saturday in the 3.2-mile run through the Tech campus.

The run was scheduled for the weekend instead of the Monday anniversary date to encourage broad community participation.

In honor of the 32 slain on April 16, 2007, 32 white balloons were released, followed by scores of orange and maroon balloons _ Tech's colors.

Many penciled messages on their race bibs in honor of the dead.

The university plans a series of events Monday. Gov. Bob McDonnell will attend one of those events, a candlelight vigil.
