Frederick schools to close 1 day for G8 summit

Thursday - 4/12/2012, 5:12pm  ET

FREDERICK, Md. - Frederick County public school students will have a day off in May because of the G-8 summit being held at Camp David in Thurmont.

Sheriff Chuck Jenkins asked for the schools to be closed May 18, a Friday, because of safety concerns and congestion as participating world leaders and news media travel through the county. The summit is scheduled for May 18 and 19.

The school system says advanced placement testing, athletics, drama productions and proms will go on as scheduled. School administrators will notify students and parents about modifications.

The school system has also been granted a waiver to hold 179 days of school rather than the state mandated 180 as a result of the day off.
