NORFOLK, Va. - The death of a suspect in the custody of Norfolk police has been ruled accidental.

The Norfolk medical examiner's office says restraints, synthetic marijuana and several other factors contributed to the death of 20-year-old Derrick Shurron Hemphill. The cause was sudden cardiac death.

Police have said officers restrained Hemphill on April 3 after they saw him acting incoherently and vomiting. Hemphill lost consciousness in the back of a police car as he was being taken to a local hospital

A spokeswoman for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office tells The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/NXHLS6) that the office is reviewing Hemphill's death to determine whether any crime was committed.

Norfolk police spokesman Chris Amos says the police department was awaiting the report from the medical examiner. He declined further comment.
