PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Leaders of a Portsmouth synagogue are hoping that an expansion of its site will create a repository for the region's Jewish history.

Chevra T'helim plans a new $1.2 million building that will serve as a place to house archives and exhibits as well as offer a place to study local Jewish history.

Synagogue leaders tell The Virginian-Pilot ( that board members will ask other area synagogues and Jewish organizations for their financial backing and for their artifacts, including record books, memorabilia, photographs and other items that reflect local culture and history.

Norfolk's Berkley Jewish community and Suffolk's Jewish history are of particular interest.

Board President Zelma Rivin says that some local synagogues have their own archives, but Hampton Roads lacks a regional Jewish history center.
