MATOACA, Va. - A Chesterfield County teacher's aide accused of assaulting an autistic student has been suspended.
Media outlets report Jan M. Costley faces a misdemeanor assault and battery charge stemming from the March 7 incident at Matoaca Middle School.
Chesterfield Police Capt. David Pritchard says video from a surveillance camera shows the 12-year-old girl was yanked, pulled and pushed during a gym class. The sixth-grader suffered severe bruising to her upper arms, nose and face.
The school district says in a statement that Costley will remain on suspension pending a resolution of the charges.
If convicted, she could face up to a year in jail and a $25,000 fine.
