RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia regulators have approved a request by Dominion Virginia Power to convert three of its coal-fired power stations into biomass-burning facilities.

The State Corporation Commission said Friday that it approved the request from the state's largest electric provider.

Dominion plans to convert the coal-fired plants in Altavista, Hopewell, and Southampton County.

Regulators say that, once completed, the power stations will generate about 51 megawatts of electricity each using primarily waste wood left over from regional timber operations.

Under Virginia law, Dominion will be able to recover certain costs related to the estimated $165.8 million conversions.
