Controlled forest fire scheduled in Va.

HOT SPRINGS, Va. - The Nature Conservancy and the Forest Service are conducting one of the largest controlled fires on the East Coast at a preserve in Virginia.

The agencies have planned the prescribed fire at Warm Springs Mountain in Bath County for Thursday.

Officials say the fires will affect about 5,700 acres on properties shared by the two groups.

The burn is aimed at helping the forest's resiliency and fight invasive species. They will specifically help pine trees that germinate in the presence of flame and oaks by clearing brush and other invasive species.

Since fire has been largely removed from the natural cycle by humans, the groups say they are reintroducing it to help the forest and the animals thrive.
