ROANOKE, Va. - A former executive for a Roanoke-based nursing home company has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for accepting kickbacks from contractors and evading taxes.

John D. Henderson of Colonial Heights also was ordered Thursday to pay nearly $700,000 in restitution, federal taxes and penalties.

Henderson pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and two counts of tax evasion in federal court in March.

Henderson is the former director of maintenance and renovations for Medical Facilities of America, which operates more than 40 nursing homes in Virginia and North Carolina. He was convicted of demanding kickbacks in exchange for giving various companies contracts for construction work at some of those nursing homes.

Four contractors have been convicted of paying kickbacks to Henderson.
