8-pound StrasBurger arrives in time for summer

WASHINGTON – The Nationals are expecting big things this season. As a prelude to what could transpire on the field, one of the biggest things will be served up at the Red Porch: The 8-pound StrasBurger.

The portly all beef burger is a combination of ground brisket, chuck and short ribs. A pile of toppings are included in the weight total.

Though the StrasBurger is not being marketed as a one man challenge, local dietitians have already speculated about the calorie count and have raised general objections to the lip licking option.

“There are always those special times where you can splurge and have different types of foods,” says Amelia Baker, a registered dietitian at Georgetown University Hospital.

“But this is an inappropriate size for any amount of people,” she says. “If you would give it to 16 people it might be more appropriate.”

The new menu item, first reported by D.C. Sports Bog’s Dan Steinberg, could pack some 8,000 to 10,000 calories by some estimates. The Nationals have not yet displayed the feast.

“If the burger is split four ways, each person’s portion would therefore be at least 2,000 calories, 150 grams of fat, 50 grams saturated fat and 625 mg of sodium,” Colleen Gerg, a registered dietitian from Chevy Chase, tells NBC Washington.

The burger also comes with fresh cut fries and a pitcher of soda.

“This isn’t a healthy message to say that this is appropriate or that this is a fun thing to do,” Baker says. “It’s exactly the opposite.”
