RICHMOND, Va. - A former patient at a Virginia psychiatric hospital has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for strangling another patient.
Thirty-two-year-old George Phillips II of Culpeper was sentenced Tuesday in Dinwiddie Circuit Court.
Phillips pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last year in the February 2010 slaying of 22-year-old Justin L. Davis at Central State Hospital. According to court records, surveillance video shows Phillips twice entering and leaving Davis' room the night of Feb. 27. Davis was found dead the next morning.
Phillips was sent to Central State for evaluation after being charged with wounding two Fauquier County deputy sheriffs during an escape attempt. According to the Richmond Times Dispatch ( http://bit.ly/AgrTUA), Phillips must serve the 40-year term consecutively to the 20 years he was ordered to serve in the Fauquier case.
