NORFOLK, Va. - Two Belarussian nationals have been convicted in Virginia of conspiring to enter fraudulent marriages so they could obtain permanent U.S. resident status.

Thirty-two-year-old Danil Lyapin and 54-year-old Nataliia Liapina are scheduled to be sentenced in September. Both Virginia Beach residents were convicted Monday on federal charges of conspiracy, marriage fraud and false statements relating to naturalization and citizenship.

According to the indictment, Lyapin entered three fraudulent marriages over the past decade and recruited his business partner to marry Liapina.

U.S. Attorney Neil H. MacBride and special agent in charge John P. Torres with Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the verdicts in a news release.
