Park says no to York County's July 4 fireworks

Wednesday - 2/29/2012, 11:03am  ET

YORK, Va. - York County officials are revisiting their Fourth of July celebration plans because they no longer can shoot off fireworks from the beach picnic area at Colonial National Historical Park.

The Daily Press ( http://bit.ly/xYzxl3) says park Superintendent Dan Smith told the Board of Supervisors recently that the county will no longer be granted a permit for the fireworks because of safety concerns.

Smith says it's too risky to move 10,000 people safely to their vehicles in the event of a serious storm. He also says the beach picnic area is within the park's fire zone.

County Administrator James McReynolds says county staff will work with the Fourth of July Committee and the National Park Service to determine what activities can be accommodated.
