ROANOKE, Va. - A community fundraising effort helped about 20 U.S. Army soldiers from around the country travel to Roanoke for a comrade's funeral.

Donors gave more than $30,000 to help pay for the soldiers' travel and lodging.

Army Sgt. Timothy John Conrad of Roanoke was killed Feb. 23 during protests in Afghanistan. Conrad's funeral was held March 3.

Conrad's father, Tim Conrad, tells The Roanoke Times ( that the soldier's widow, Holly, used money left over from the fundraising to help some soldiers attend a memorial service in Indiana for another soldier killed in the attack. She also bought 145 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to send to Conrad's unit in Afghanistan.

Some of the money will be donated to the Disabled American Veterans in Roanoke.
