Country club faces lawsuit over 2007 fish kill

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has filed a lawsuit against the Blacksburg Country Club over a chemical spill that killed about 10,000 fish in the North Fork of the Roanoke River.

The agency filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Roanoke that seeks unspecified damages from the country club in the deaths of about 169 Roanoke logperch, a federally endangered species, nearly five years ago.

General manager Tom Duetsch told The Roanoke Times that he hopes that improvements the club has agreed to make to the river bank will offset any damages.

Herbicides used to treat the golf course accidentally spilled into the river in July 2007, killing the logperch and other aquatic life.
