RICHMOND, Va. - A Richmond group that aims to recognize slavery's historic impact wants to establish a national slavery museum in the city's historic Shockoe Bottom district.

The Richmond City Council Slave Trail Commission is seeking public input on the proposed United States National Slavery Museum. The project would be a living heritage site that would include an African-American Genealogy Center and include historic sites on the city's existing Slave Trail.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports ( that project consultant Joy Bailey said the museum plans to use existing buildings instead of new construction. She spoke at a weekend meeting at which people were asked, among other things, whether they'd support such an effort.

Former Gov. L. Douglas Wilder unsuccessfully tried to develop a slavery museum with the same name in Fredericksburg.
