Officials discuss closure of NoVa Training Center

Wednesday - 2/8/2012, 11:42am  ET

FAIRFAX, Va. - Northern Virginia residents will have an opportunity to ask questions about the pending closure of a state-run center that provides service to individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Northern Virginia Training Center in Fairfax County is scheduled to close in 2015 as part of a legal settlement between the Department of Justice and state authorities. The center provides service to about 150 individuals. It's among four of five centers throughout the state that must close as part of the settlement.

Supporters of the settlement say large, state-run facilities like the Fairfax County center provide inferior care to smaller, community-based services. But many families with loved ones living in the facilities have opposed their closure.

A public meeting on the settlement is scheduled for Wednesday evening at the Fairfax County Government Center.
