Va. woman's mission: Sleep for new military moms

Monday - 1/30/2012, 7:46am  ET

WASHINGTON - A Virginia woman is on a mission to help new military moms with something that is truly priceless -- sleep.

Imagine being a brand new military mom, living away from your family and to top it off, your husband is deployed when the baby arrives. Enter Denise Stern and Mission Sleep.

Mission Sleep is the non-profit arm of Stern's paid service Let Mommy Sleep. The organization, in partnership with Walter Reed Medical Center, supports new military mothers.

Stern sends her Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses to the homes of new moms to help support and educate. But, most of all, the nurses give moms a chance to sleep.

"We would like to provide five nights, at least, of free overnight care to moms just home from the hospital with their newborn, whose spouse is deployed," she said.

Those interested in using her services should email Stern at care@letmommysleep.com.

She said she'll do her best to get everybody on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Her services go from Northern Virginia to Baltimore.

Stern said the public has been very generous giving donations to help with the effort, but she's in the market for some corporate backing in order to help more military moms.
