WASHINGTON - Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton is asking Occupy DC protesters to show "respect and civility" to U.S. Park Police when they begin enforcing camping regulations on Monday.
Norton, a Democrat who represents the District of Columbia in Congress, said in a news release Sunday that the National Park Service has so far been respectful of the protesters, who have been camping in McPherson Square near the White House since October. She's urging the protesters to do the same.
Norton says if protesters resist enforcement of the camping ban, it will just give ammunition to their critics and could undermine their message about income inequality. She says Occupy DC and similar demonstrations have "changed the conversation in Washington."
