Jack Johnson disbarred in Md.

WASHINGTON – Maryland’s highest court disbarred former Prince George’s County Executive Jack Johnson Friday.

The Maryland Court of Appeals issued its ruling Friday.

Johnson, who used to Prince George’s County’s top prosecutor, is now serving prison time on federal corruption charges.

The charges against Johnson arose from a sweeping probe that revealed rampant corruption and a pervasive pay-to-play culture in the county of 860,000 residents.

In December, Johnson received a prison sentence of more than seven years for taking up to $1 million in bribes and gifts from developers who did business with the government. Johnson was ordered to pay a $100,000 fine and forfeit $78,000 and an antique Mercedes Benz.

The scandal also involved Johnson’s wife, Leslie, a former Prince George’s County councilmember. She received a year and a day in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit witness and evidence tampering.

Leslie Johnson, who’s to begin her sentence March 9, also has to pay a $15,000 fine, perform 240 hours and serve two years of probation.
