Police: D.C. cop on leave after assaulting bartender

WASHINGTON – A D.C. police officer was arrested on Wednesday morning after authorities say he attacked a bartender at a local club.

Sgt. Yurell Washington, a 26-year veteran with the force, was charged with assault and has been put on administrative leave, police say.

Washington was at Georgene’s, a club in Southeast, early on Wednesday when witnesses say he yelled at a bartender, grabbed her by the neck and then threw her on the ground outside of the club, according to ABC 7.

The officer is reported to have a relationship with the victim.

Washington is the first officer arrested this year. Last year, 28 D.C. officers were arrested for crimes ranging from domestic violence to murder
