To save money, don’t buy these things at grocery store

WASHINGTON – Grocery stores are great for convenience, but shoppers can save big bucks buying many items elsewhere.

The cheapest cosmetics and skin care products aren’t at grocery stores. For those, head to drug stores and big box stores such as Target and Walmart.

U.S. News and World Report published a list of money saving detours on Tuesday, pointing out the best prices for gourmet cheeses are at warehouse clubs and the best prices for home necessities such as light bulbs, extension cords, nails and small tools are at hardware stores.

Kitchen appliances, cookware and bake ware are less expensive at box stores or online, the list says. Also, skip the grocery for name brand spices you can find cheaper at box stores and ethnic markets.

Another tip: Buying pre-ground coffee at grocery stores tends to be much more expensive than buying coffee beans.

And lastly, when stocking up for a party, the best bet for cheap balloons and candles will be at party supply or dollar stores.
