WASHINGTON - The nation's capital will be the North American host city for World Environment Day on June 5.
The annual event is organized by the United Nations Environment Programme.
Mayor Vincent Gray says he's proud that Washington has been selected, saying his goal is to make the city the greenest in the world. Amy Fraenkel of the UNEP says the District of Columbia was chosen because of the work it's done on sustainability as well as its plans for the future.
The theme of this year's World Environment Day is the "Green Economy." The UNEP is trying to steer investment into environmentally friendly business initiatives. District leaders plan to sign a green economy pledge with numerous embassies this month.
