Va. foresters offer 'dry hydrant' grant money

Friday - 1/6/2012, 8:54am  ET

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia localities can apply for grant money from the state Department of Forestry to ensure water is available to rural firefighters.

The funding is for what the department describes as "dry fire hydrants." These typically involve a non-pressurized pipe system installed in lakes, ponds or streams.

The dry hydrants are used when a wildfire or structure fire occurs in areas where sidewalk hydrants are not available.

The forestry department says more than 30 applications for grants were approved last year. Typically, they say, the number of grant requests exceeds available funding.

Virginia's dry fire hydrant grant program is funded by the General Assembly.
