East River Mt Tunnel water line to be replaced

Thursday - 1/5/2012, 11:30am  ET

BLAND, Va. - Motorists passing through the East River Mountain Tunnel likely won't notice a major water line project when construction begins later this year.

Contractors will begin replacing the tunnel's aging water line in late February of early March. More than 5,000 feet of new water line will be installed inside the tunnel.

Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Michelle Earl tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraph ( http://bit.ly/xYmlU6) that the water line is above traffic and the project isn't expected to affect travel through the tunnel.

Bland County director of public works Rodney Ratliff says the tunnel's existing line has developed leaks.

The tunnel carries Interstate 77 and U.S. 52 through the mountain between Rocky Gap and Bluefield, W.Va.
