Key to home repair: Know what you can fix yourself

UNDATED – When something needs fixing around the house, do you call the repair man, or turn into Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor?

The real key to home improvement is knowing when you can fix it yourself — and when you can’t.

Experts say you should avoid any repairs that require heavy equipment, especially outdoors.

Ken Collier, editor-in-chief of The Family Handyman, tells USA TODAY if it’s a smaller job, such as a leaky faucet or repairing drywall, you can actually save money and boost your pride by doing it yourself.

The bottom line: Use common sense, take your time and it probably wouldn’t hurt to read some Internet advice and watch some videos.
