LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - Schoolchildren in three Maryland counties that are in the Washington metro area aren't getting the day off Monday, despite it being a federal holiday and many local and government offices being closed.
Schools in Howard, St. Mary's and Charles counties are open. In Virginia, schools are open in Alexandria.
Elsewhere in the region -- and in eight of the nation's 10 largest school systems -- students are free to enjoy the nation's official celebration of New Year's Day.
Some parents aren't very happy about their system's decision to open schools. But the chairwoman of the Alexandria School Board says there are plenty of parents who are happy their kids are going back to school because they have to go back to work.
