Monday - 1/2/2012, 1:42pm  ET

NORFOLK, Va. - The new year will see 300 sailors and officers depart Naval Station Norfolk for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea.

The cruiser Vella Gulf is scheduled to sail away from Virginia waters on Tuesday. It was originally scheduled to leave on Monday.

The Virginian-Pilot ( http://bit.ly/subsBQ) says the ship will relieve the destroyer Ramage, currently on patrol in the region.

Vella Gulf is commanded by Capt. Mark W. Harris. The ship will support the ballistic missile defense of Europe during deployment.
