Md. law tightening stent oversight recommended

The Maryland Health Care Commission is recommending that state law tighten oversight of hospitals that perform cardiac stent surgeries.

Its report sent to Gov. Martin O’Malley and the General Assembly on Wednesday also calls for suspending hospitals’ authority to perform the surgeries if certain performance standards are not met. The report came in response to concerns about widespread cases where patients may have been unnecessarily implanted with cardiac stents.
