WASHINGTON - Control over a piece of the National Mall overseen by the National Park Service and envisioned as a demonstration space is switching hands.
The Washington Post reports that Union Square, an 11-acre parcel of the Mall to the west of the Capitol that includes the Capitol Reflecting Pool, will now be overseen by the Architect of the Capitol. The Architect of the Capitol is responsible for the infrastructure of the Capitol complex ( http://wapo.st/sai4yb).
The newspaper says the National Park Service has overseen the space since the 1930s. The Park Service's chief spokesman says the office was caught by surprise by the transfer and "don't know what prompted it." The U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms, Terrance W. Gainer, says the change was made for security reasons.
