Lady Maryland relaunching after winter in dry dock

Tuesday - 4/10/2012, 4:26am  ET

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Lady Maryland is ready to be re-launched after spending the winter in a Baltimore dry dock.

The flagship of Baltimore's Living Classrooms Foundation underwent repairs this winter in dry dock next to the foundation's waterfront museum and is to be re-launched Tuesday.

The 25-year-old replica schooner is used to teach students about the environment and the region's maritime heritage. The repairs began after the Lady Maryland failed a Coast Guard inspection last year.

The Living Classrooms Foundation says more than 3,200 nails, screws and other fasteners were replaced. The hull and frame were also repaired and the schooner was re-caulked to make the hull watertight. The foundation says it has raised about $100,000 of the $180,000 cost of the repairs.
