D.C. mayor has new plan for historic Lincoln Theatre

WASHINGTON - The historic Lincoln Theatre where Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald once played on Washington's U Street will soon have new management after worries that it could close.

Mayor Vincent Gray will announce Tuesday that oversight of the city-owned theater will shift from an independent foundation to the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The commission will hire a new executive director to create a long-term plan to make the theater self-sustaining.

Gray also is announcing a four-week partnership with Landmark Theatres to bring the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" to the Lincoln. It opens on Wednesday.

In September, theater board members said the city cut off subsidies for its operations. Supporters, including neighbor Ben's Chili Bowl, urged city officials to keep the theater open.
