Converter thieves hit Petersburg dealerships

Tuesday - 7/5/2011, 7:59am  ET

PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Used car dealerships in Petersburg are being targeted by thieves who steal catalytic converters from vehicles.

Jarman's Auto Sales owner Glenn E. Jarman tells The Progress-Index that thieves have struck at his dealership repeatedly over the past several months.

Rountree Motors sales consultant Floyd Frances says converters have been removed from a few vehicles parked in an area that's the least visible from the street.

Petersburg Bureau of Police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt says the department is investigating the thefts. She says police also are working with scrap metal dealers to curb demand.

Jarman says automakers should make converters harder to steal. He says converters should have identification numbers. He also suggests changing the design so it's harder to remove converters from vehicles.
