Early finish on day 7 of Redskins Camp

RICHMOND — Day seven in the books here in Richmond and it ended a little earlier than usual.

Head coach Jay Gruden felt guys were a little sore and banged up so he ended practice a little early today.

“Felt like they were a little wounded,” he said.

Despite ending early today…

“I feel good where we’re at,” Gruden said. “For the most part, everybody this time in camp in the NFL probably has a little soreness right now. Now, it’s how you manage it, how you get the most out of them and how you tailor practice.”

So, how will he tailor practice the next couple days with this in mind?

“Tomorrow we are going to do pads again in the morning,” Gruden said. “Saturday we have our fan day. Sunday, they will be off and then New England will be here Monday. My goal is to get them to Monday, ready and healthy so they can compete against New England in their finest form.”

Officials

The Redskins had Terry McAulay and his crew at practice today for the first time. It’s always fun to watch defensive backs coach Raheem Morris when officials are here. He is constantly barking at that them, riding them to throw flags. It’s very entertaining.

Defensive players seem to think there is an offensive slant to this group.

“I think they were a little offensive friendly today,” cornerback David Amerson said. “Probably because Gruden is an offensive guy. It will do nothing but make us better.”

Safety Ryan Clark agreed.

“We have an offensive head coach. The referees have to also play to that, so we understand. We don’t care, we just want to beat them up anyway. We just want to get everyone out here better and part of that is playing within the rules.”

See, they play off their defensive backs coach.

McAulay and crew went over some of the rule changes for this year and will explain to the team during meetings tonight.

One experiment that we will see for the Hall of Fame game this weekend and the first two preseason games is extra points will be from the 15-yard line. They will see how it goes. Two-point conversions will remain from the three yard line.

– Pierre Garcon was dressed and did drill work again, but was held out of team drills.

– Tyler Polumbus was back for the afternoon walk-through, he missed yesterday and this morning for personal reasons.

– Trent Williams got kicked in the shin but is OK. He didn’t participate in the afternoon walk-through, but will be fine.
