WASHINGTON - The playoffs have a way of turning bigwigs into rank-and-file fans - and excitement over the Redskins landing a spot in the playoffs has been brewing for more than a decade.

Sunday afternoon, the Redskins host the team's first playoff game since 2000.

"Aren't we all enthused about the fact that the Redskins have won seven straight games, against all odds?" asked Mayor Vince Gray.

Stepping quickly to the mic during a joint news conference, Police Chief Cathy Lanier added, "I just want to say for the record, I love RG III."

Robert Griffin III and the Redskins take on the Seattle Seahawks Sunday afternoon with a spot in the Divisional round on the line.

At the conference, Gray seamlessly transformed into an NFL analyst when talking about the game.

"If they were playing in Seattle, I wouldn't have a very optimistic perspective — Seattle's 8-0 at home," he said.

"Seattle on the road is 3-5, and one of those games, by the way, was the one that ended because the replacement referees completely missed the call. So Seattle won two games on the road this year," he said to laughter.

Gray has a friendly wager with his Seattle counterpart, Mike McGinn, on the Sunday's outcome.

The loser has to fly the winner's flag at city hall.

But Gray sees it as more than a sports bet. He hopes to advance the plight of the citizens of the District.

"If we win, not only will our flag fly over the Seattle city hall, but it will say: ‘No Taxation Without Representation,'" he said.
