Schwartz has dislocated big toe, out indefinitely

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants left guard Geoff Schwartz has a dislocated right big toe and will be in a walking boot for a week to 10 days.

The Giants announced on Tuesday that Schwartz was examined by Dr. Robert Anderson in Charlotte, North Carolina, and that he will be evaluated weekly. The team did not indicate how long he would be sidelined.

“Obviously you can’t rush him back, but it sure would be good to get him back ASAP rather the other way around,” coach Tom Coughlin said after getting the good news from the doctors. “It is not going to be easy for him. He is a big man.”

Schwartz, who signed a four-year, $16.8 million contract in the offseason, will begin rehabilitation after he gets out of the boot. He was hurt in Friday’s game against the Jets.

“This is just a minor setback,” Schwartz said. “I plan on attacking the rehab program so I can get back on the field as soon as possible with my teammates and help us win games.”

Rookie Weston Richburg, a second-round draft pick, has replaced Schwartz at left guard.

The Giants (4-0) will have new starters at both guard positions on Thursday in the preseason finale against the New England Patriots (2-1). Veteran John Jerry is taking over at right guard with Brandon Mosley sidelined with a back problem this week.

Mosley and offensive tackle James Brewer were seen by back specialists this week and Coughlin hopes they will return to practice soon.

The offensive line doesn’t have a lot of depth this week with Schwartz, Mosley, Brewer (back) and tackle Charles Brown (shoulder) all sidelined.

Defensive tackle Marcus Kuhn (ankle), receivers Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) and Trindon Holliday (hamstring) and cornerback Prince Amukamara (cornerback) also are out.
