BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo Bills linebacker Kiko Alonso has sustained what the team fears to be a serious knee injury while working out in Oregon.

General manager Doug Whaley announced Alonso had been hurt, in a statement released by the team Tuesday night.

Whaley was unable to provide many details except to say the early prognosis is the injury “may be significant.”

Messages left with Alonso’s agent Stephen Caric were not immediately returned.

Alonso was an NFL defensive rookie of the year contender last year after being drafted Buffalo in the second round out of Oregon.

The Bills have been off since ending a mandatory minicamp two weeks ago. Players are scheduled to report for the start of training camp in suburban Rochester on July 18.
