WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Nationals and right-hander Jordan Zimmermann have agreed to a one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. Terms of the deal were not immediately known, but Zimmermann's arbitration asking price was $5.8 million while the Nationals submitted $4.6 million. The 26-year-old Zimmermann made $2.3 million last season, when he went 12-8 with a 2.94 ERA last season.
UNDATED (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers have released 36-year-old defensive back Charles Woodson, who had two years left on his contract. The Indianapolis Colts say they will not re-sign former league sacks champion Dwight Freeney or oft-injured receiver Austin Collie. And backup quarterback Tarvaris Jackson is coming back to Buffalo after re-signing with the Bills.
NEW YORK (AP) -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') was paid $29.49 million by league owners in 2011, nearly triple his compensation from the previous year. By comparison, Saints quarterback Drew Brees is the league's highest paid player with a five-year deal averaging $20 million. According to the league's most recent tax return, much of Goodell's pay comes in the form of a $22.3 million bonus.
HOUSTON (AP) -- Gary Payton, Tim Hardaway and Mitch Richmond are among 12 finalists for election into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Other finalists include former NBA stars Maurice Cheeks, Spencer Haywood and Bernard King, along with WNBA star Dawn Staley. Guy Lewis, Jerry Tarkanian (tahr-KAY'-nee-ehn), Rick Pitino (pih-TEE'-noh), Sylvia Hatchell and Tom Heinsohn (HYN'-suhn) are the past and present coaches among the finalists.
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) -- Bernhard Langer (LAHN'-gur) is the first-round leader at the Champions Tour event in Naples, Fla. Langer fired a 10-under-par 62 that included an eagle and five birdies on the back nine for a three-shot edge over Bob Tway. Tom Pernice (pur-NEES') Jr., Jay Don Blake and John Huston opened with 66s.
