Porous Saints defense breaks record...Stafford keeps throwing up...Informal NHL talks conclude

Sunday - 12/30/2012, 4:49pm  ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The New Orleans Saints' last-ranked defense has allowed more yards in a season than any team in NFL history. The Saints surrendered 287 yards in the first half of today's game against the Carolina Panthers, surpassing by six yards the mark of 6,793 yards allowed by the 1981 Baltimore Colts.

DETROIT (AP) -- Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has set an NFL single-season record for pass attempts. Stafford threw his 692nd pass in the first quarter against Chicago on Sunday, completing a 5-yarder to tight end Brandon Pettigrew. He surpasses the mark of 691 set by Drew Bledsoe of New England in 1994.

NEW YORK (AP) -- The two sides in the NHL lockout have completed a series of informational discussions by conference call and in face-to-face meetings with staff members that lasted much of the weekend. Those talks were spurred by the nearly 300-page contract proposal the NHL presented to the union on Thursday, although it isn't yet clear if this offer will swiftly lead to new bargaining. There have been no negotiations since the sides met with a federal mediator Dec. 13.

UFA, Russia (AP) -- Goals by Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Nugent Hopkins and New York Islanders prospect Ryan Stome (STROH'-mee) allowed Canada to beat the United States 2-1 in the junior ice hockey world championships. The Canadians led Group B at 3-0 and have outscored their opponents 17-7. The Americans are 1-2 and need to beat Slovakia on Monday to advance in the tournament.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Just 15 teams in NBA history have had a winning streak as long as 17 games, the last being the Houston Rockets' 22-game run in 2007-08. The Los Angeles Clippers will look to join that group when they complete a home-and-home series with the visiting Utah Jazz later today. The Clippers stretched their team-record winning streak by turning a 19-point, third-quarter deficit into a 116-114 win over the Jazz in Salt Lake City on Friday.
