KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Colts quarterback Andrew Luck surpassed Cam Newton's year-old record for yards passing by a rookie when he had 123 in the first half of today's game against the Chiefs. Luck needed only 74 yards to break the Carolina quarterback's mark of 4,051 yards, and he eclipsed it while leading the Colts to a field goal that gave Indianapolis a 13-3 halftime lead.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Washington Redskins kicker Kai Forbath (ky FORH'-bath) set the NFL record for consecutive field goals to begin a career with 17 straight. Forbath kicked field goals of 45 and 42 yards in the first half of today's game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Garrett Hartley had kicked 16 straight for New Orleans.
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) -- Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky maintains his innocence and tells a Pennsylvania newspaper he is "trying to learn from ... the struggle and circumstances" as he focuses on an appeal of his conviction on child sex abuse charges. The (Wilkes-Barre) Citizens' Voice says Sandusky sent a note from his prison cell declining an interview, saying his attorneys have told him to stay quiet. The paper said Sandusky wrote that "there is much to learn" and that "nobody who covered the case and reported it has the time or took the time to study the allegations ... Justice and fairness were not a focus."
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Two people familiar with the negotiations say outfielder Nick Swisher has agreed to a $56 million, four-year contract with the Cleveland Indians, pending a physical. The deal was confirmed on Twitter by Swisher, who hit .272 with 24 homers and 93 RBIs for the New York Yankees last season.
LONDON (AP) -- A British newspaper is suing Lance Armstrong for more than $1.5 million over the cyclist's successful libel action regarding doping allegations. The Sunday Times paid Armstrong 300,000 pounds (now about $485,000) to settle a case after it printed allegations in 2004 that he took performance-enhancing drugs. The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency concluded this year that Armstrong led a massive doping program on his teams.
