Rochester lands Symetra Tour event to replace LPGA

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A month after the LPGA ended a 38-year run in Rochester, the city has landed a tournament on the second-tier Symetra Tour.

The Danielle Downey Classic will return women’s professional golf to Rochester next July at Brook-Lea Country Club, which was designed by Donald Ross. This will be the first Symetra Tour event in Rochester in the 35-year history of the circuit, which bills itself as the road to the LPGA.

Danielle Downey was a former LPGA Tour player and Rochester native. She died at 33 in a car crash in January in Alabama, where she starred in college at Auburn.
